QUESTIONS HOMEOWNERS ASK
Should I install a gas or electric furnace?
Both furnace types have their own strengths and drawbacks, and the right choice depends on your home, climate, and budget.
A gas furnace uses natural gas or propane to generate heat. Heat is created in a heat exchanger and a blower then pushes the warmed air through your home’s ductwork. Gas furnaces are best suited in colder climates. They have a lower operating cost, but installation is more complex. There is a low risk of gas leak or carbon monoxide if not maintained properly.
An electric furnace uses electric heating elements (coils) to produce heat. Air is blown over the hot elements and distributed through the ducts. Conversely, electric furnaces are initially inexpensive to purchase and are easy to install, but they have a higher operating cost over time. It may also take longer to warm your home. All risk associate with a gas furnace is eliminated with an electric furnace.
What is the difference between duct and ductless?
The primary options available for air conditioning systems in homes are ducted and ductless models. Each system provides cooling but have distinct functionality. Hence, both these systems have unique benefits and drawbacks.
Ducted air conditioners operate as central systems that deliver air throughout a building using a network of ducts. Homes commonly have these systems installed because they operate through concealed ductwork that travels through walls, ceilings, and floors to deliver air through vents to different rooms.
A ductless air conditioner (Mini-Split) is linked to an exterior unit by a compact conduit in this system. They operate in a single room. Therefore, no ductwork is necessary. The indoor unit delivers cooling to designated spaces which enables zoned climate management.
Are there any rebates available?
There are rebates and incentives on highly energy efficient air conditioning and heating systems. In addition, homeowners are eligible for federal credits and state incentives available from your local municipality.
Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit: Homeowners can claim up to 30% of the cost of installing energy-efficient HVAC systems, with a maximum of $600 for air conditioning units and $2,000 for heat pumps.
Federal Tax Credits: The federal government offers tax credits for the purchase and installation of select central air conditioning systems, valid from 01/01/2023 through 12/31/2032.
